The trip from Newcastle to Keswick uses two trains and a bus. Northern’s train to Carlisle takes about an hour and a half; a second train then takes 14 minutes from Carlisle to Penrith; and Stagecoach’s X4 or X5 takes about 40 minutes from Penrith to Keswick bus station, Keswick itself having no railway station. The middle leg is an Avanti West Coast or TransPennine Express train, which you leave after a single stop. The typical journey takes a little over three hours.
About 40 minutes of the typical journey is spent waiting, split between Carlisle and Penrith. How well the three legs line up makes a real difference: the best connections on the weekday we checked brought the whole trip down to about 2h35, while others took just over three hours. With two changes, a late-running Northern train can knock on to both, so an earlier departure from Newcastle gives you more room to recover than the last one of the day.
Driving is much quicker if you have the choice. The road route is 93 miles via the A69 and takes about 1h50, more than an hour less than the typical train and bus.
Connecting departures from Newcastle ran every 30 to 60 minutes or so from 05:42 to 17:54 on the weekday timetable we checked, twice an hour from 09:26 to 12:53. The 07:26 reaches Keswick at about half past ten, and the 17:54, the last, at around nine in the evening. A different pattern goes through Wigton, taking the train there and a bus on to Keswick; those journeys left Newcastle at 07:03, 08:26 and 12:26 and took about 3h20.
Keswick bus station is roughly 400 metres from the Market Square, a walk of about six minutes.
