London to Keswick by Train and Bus

By Keswick Guide editors · Updated 22 October 2026

Keswick has no railway station, so from London the last part of the journey is by bus. The usual way is Avanti West Coast from London Euston to Penrith, a little over three hours with five stops, then Stagecoach’s X4 or X5 from Penrith to Keswick bus station, about 40 minutes and 17 stops. On the typical journey you wait about 17 minutes at Penrith, and the whole trip comes to roughly four hours.

When to leave Euston

On the weekday timetable we checked, eight Euston departures connected neatly with the bus: 07:30, 09:30, 10:30, 10:40, 12:30, 14:30, 16:30 and 17:30. The first of them has you in Keswick at about half past eleven, and the 17:30, the last, at about half past nine in the evening. Other departures also get you there via Penrith, but they took between about 4h30 and just under six hours, so it is worth aiming for one of those eight. Driving is 304 miles via the M6, about 5h35, so the train and bus save roughly an hour and a half.

The Caledonian Sleeper

On the weekday we checked, the Caledonian Sleeper left Euston at 23:45 and reached Carlisle about five hours twenty minutes later, a little after five in the morning. An Avanti West Coast train then takes 14 minutes from Carlisle to Penrith, and the X5 finishes the trip, so you are in Keswick at about 06:40, just under seven hours after leaving London, with about 40 minutes of waiting spread across those two changes. The sleeper suits anyone who wants to leave London late in the evening and start the next day in Keswick, though it does mean getting off at Carlisle very early.

Arriving
