From Manchester it is one train and one bus. Board a TransPennine Express train at Manchester Oxford Road; it reaches Penrith in about an hour and a half, with five stops. From Penrith, Stagecoach’s X4 or X5 takes about 40 minutes and 19 stops to reach Keswick bus station, which is where the journey ends, since Keswick has no station of its own. Allow about 2h40 for the trip, or a few minutes less on the best connections.
On the typical run there are about 22 minutes between the train getting to Penrith and the bus leaving for Keswick, enough to absorb a TransPennine train running a few minutes late. The two rides themselves add up to 2h16, 94 minutes on the train and 42 on the bus, so that wait at Penrith is the only slack in the typical journey.
On the weekday we checked, connecting trains left Oxford Road about hourly from 06:25 to 18:24, nearly always at 24 or 25 minutes past the hour, which makes the departure time easy to remember. The 06:25 has you in Keswick soon after nine in the morning; the 18:24 was the last in that series and reached Keswick at about 21:00. If you are setting off after work, the 17:24 gets you to Keswick at about eight in the evening. Other Penrith connections at different times of day also showed up, taking from about 2h40 to just over three hours, but none was quicker than the regular hourly train from Oxford Road.
By car the trip is 118 miles via the M6 and takes about 2h10, about 25 minutes less than the train and bus.
The Market Square is a six-minute walk from where the bus stops at Keswick bus station, about 400 metres.
